ArmInfo.Levon Kocharyan, the son of the second President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, who is currently in custody, has received a parliamentary mandate in the National Assembly of Armenia. Vahagn Hovakimyan, the head of Central Election Commission, stated at of the commission's meeting.
According to him, several candidates for the parliamentary mandate submitted applications of self-recusal, as a result of which the turn on the electoral list came to Kocharyan Jr.
Thus, in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Armenia dated December 7, 2021, Levon Kocharyan should be released from arrest.
However, as Kocharyan Jr.'s lawyers reported, the criminal case against their client will continue. After the decision of the RA Central Electoral Commission, Levon Kocharyan's legal team announced that they did not submit a complaint for special consideration regarding the application of partial, alternative measures in connection with granting their client the status of a member of the Parliament of Armenia. "The reason is that Levon Kocharyan will be released by force of law, so the complaint regarding the grounds for the arrest becomes meaningless, which is why the defense is filing a complaint only on the basis of reasonable suspicion," the defense statement says.
Levon Kocharyan is accused of attacking four police officers during anti-government protests. Earlier it was reported that MP from the "Armenia" opposition faction Armen Charchyan resigned his mandate in connection with his reappointment to the post of head of the Izmirlian medical center. Following him on the list, candidates for members of the RA Parliament from the same bloc Mihrdat Madatyan (N47), Anzhela Nalbandyan (N 48), Gerasim Vardanyan (N49) submitted applications to the Central Election Commission to renounce their mandate. As a result, Levon Kocharyan, who was number 50 on the electoral list, should receive a parliamentary mandate.
