ArmInfo. Germany is close to Armenia during this difficult period for it. Victor Richter, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Armenia, stated on November 6 at the opening of the Media Literacy Week in Yerevan.
According to him, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation promotes the implementation of this important initiative in Armenia. The diplomat considered the involvement of young people in the process of democratic reforms to be of key importance. "Germany stands by Armenia in this difficult period. A clear indication of this is the visit of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to Yerevan at the end of last week and the effectively held meetings here," the Ambassador noted.
At the same time, Mr. Richter drew attention to the fact that Armenia occupies a worthy place in terms of the development of information technology and digitalization in the country. In this regard, he expressed his belief that there is a serious potential for the development of cooperation between Armenia and Germany in these fields. The diplomat also touched upon the activities of the Goethe Center in Armenia, and announced his intention to open a branch of the Goethe Institute in Gyumri.
In turn, USAID/Armenia Mission Director John Allelo , noted that the U.S. Agency for International Development believes in the fundamental role of media literacy in the development of democratic societies. In this regard, he positively assessed USAID's participation in projects to strengthen media literacy in Armenia. According to him, popularizing media literacy, especially among young people, will allow them to develop critical thinking, distinguish disinformation and manipulative information, and become familiar with the rights of citizens in a democratic society.
Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Jan Plesinger also considered it important to hold this event in Armenia. "The European Union attaches great importance to the development of media literacy in Armenia. This is an important tool for democracy, allowing us to distinguish disinformation. The European Union is committed to assisting Armenia in facilitating a sustainable fight against disinformation, information manipulation, establishing independent media, ensuring the activities of civil society, and developing critical thinking," the EU diplomat noted.
Media Literacy Week will be held in Armenia on November 6-12. For the 6th year in a row, it is held jointly with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. Armenian Media Literacy Week is a continuation of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week initiated by UNESCO. This year it is co-financed by the European Union "Youth in Action: Youth Empowerment and Leadership Development in Armenia" project and within the framework of the Media Program in Armenia project implemented through the U.S. Agency for International Development.
