ArmInfo. Nonetheless, nothing seems to have to come out of the meeting of the UN Security Council on August 16 on the blockade of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Member of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Co-chair of the US Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues Adam Schiff stated this in his video message on his microblog on Twitter.
"There is a humanitarian crisis in Artsakh, 120,000 residents are deprived of food, medicine and other essential goods, as a result of which deaths have already been recorded. Armenians living in Artsakh continue to be under siege, as Azerbaijan blocked the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting Artsakh with Armenia," Mr. Schiff noted, in this vein calling for an immediate response to the current situation. He also informed that he had a telephone conversation with the U.S. Ambassador to the UN and touched upon the above-mentioned emergency meeting of the Security Council.
"We need a resolution requiring an end to this violation of international law, it is necessary to ensure the unhindered supply of food and medicine, as well as the free movement of people.
US President Joe Biden and the US administration need to do so much more. They need to cut off military aid for Azerbaijan, they need to make sure that we bring an end to this the illegal blockade. We should not be providing a dime to Azerbaijan at least now, when this catastrophe continues. The US cannot be silent, the administration needs to speak and act, and some steps must be taken. Otherwise, people will continue to die," the American legislator said.
He recalled that thousands of people have already died in the war unleashed by Azerbaijan in 2020, and this country continues to illegally keep prisoners of war, violating international law. In conclusion, mr. Schiff expressed his deep concern over the threat of another Armenian genocide.
