ArmInfo. The issue of ensuring the rights and security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh was discussed during the meeting in Brussels. Andrea Wiktorin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the EU to Armenia, announced during a press conference on May 15.
At the same time, she stressed that she could not say more, since she was not present at the meeting and she made her statements only based on the message of the head of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, published after the meeting.
Referring to the same message, Andrea Wiktorin noted that the text states that the rights of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh must be guaranteed, which in the near future implies a number of additional steps. "There is an understanding that an international mechanism is needed, but we must work on its formation and coordination between the parties," the Ambassador stressed.
She also noted that some EU countries would like to be involved in the negotiation process between Stepanakert and Baku. In this regard, the diplomat mentioned the similar intention of Charles Michel, namely to sit at the negotiating table in an expanded format, which is exactly what is expected on June 1 at a meeting with the participation of the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany.
In turn, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Paruyr Hovhannisyan noted that Charles Michel clearly indicated that the rights and security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh are at the center of the negotiation process, urging Azerbaijan to get involved in this issue with a positive agenda.
The Deputy Minister drew attention to the fact that earlier Azerbaijan refused to include the issue of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh on the agenda at all, stating that there was no need to look for any solutions. , Hovhannisyan said.
