ArmInfo. The participation of the European Union in ensuring peace in the South Caucasus is not directed against anyone.
This was stated by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar during discussions on the topic: "Security in the South Caucasus: What is the role of the EU?", organized by the Brussels-based European Policy Center. According to Klaar, the EU is interested in the prosperity of the South Caucasus, ensuring peace and stability in this region: "Positive development in the region is in our interests. Our participation in ensuring this is not directed against anyone. The South Caucasus is in our neighborhood, and we want peace and stability here."
The Special Representative added that Russia's war against Ukraine has not made significant changes in the policy and activation of the EU in the region. According to APA, Klaar noted that after the 44-day war in 2020, the EU began to work more actively with the countries of the region: "I would like to note once again that the EU was involved in the process earlier, our contacts did not increase due to the occupation of Ukraine, before that we already had these contacts".
At the same time, he pointed to the continuation of negotiations on a peace agreement and the exchange of texts of its possible version. According to him, the process does not stop. "But the issue that was also raised today is what will happen after the signing of the peace agreement, how will we ensure a comprehensive peace, and these relate not only to the rights and security of Karabakh Armenians, but also to communications as wlell as how people in Armenia and Azerbaijan will start communication. One thing have a peace agreement, but ultimately the issues arising from this conflict must be resolved," the EU Special Representative concluded.
