The City Council of Haifa, Israel, has unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915 and approved the construction of a memorial to the Armenian Genocide victims. Thus, Haifa is the second Israeli city to recognize the Armenian Genocide, Petah Tikva being the first. In April 2020, a memorial commemorating the Armenian Genocide victims was set up there.
Israeli mass media report the Turkish ambassador demanded that the Israeli government ban the erection of the monument in Haifa. However, Alexander Zinker, an ex-member of Israeli Knesset reported that the Israeli foreign office left the Turkish ambassador's letter unanswered.
Israel has not so far officially recognized the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. A relevant bill has repeatedly been submitted to Parliament, but debate would end in the bill being rejected.
