ArmInfo. For the first time in the history of independent Armenia, the country will host the European Weightlifting Championship among adults in 2023. According to the press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia (MECS), the European Weightlifting Federation confirmed its consent in an official letter to the Armenian Federation. Preliminarily, the championship will be held in April 2023.
As deputy head of the department Karen Giloyan noted, everything possible will be done to ensure that the sporting event is held at the highest level. "This is a good opportunity to once again show our high athletic achievements in this sport, and the championship will give impetus to the further popularization of weightlifting," he said. It is noted that the championship in Armenia will become a rating for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
To recall, at the end of March, a delegation of the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) visited Armenia, which got acquainted with the capabilities of the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan , where the European Championship will be held.
It should be noted that in 1983, the 57th World Weightlifting Championship was to be held in the Yerevan Sports Complex. All the conditions for its holding were satisfied, serious preparations were made, everything was ready. However, the competition was suddenly moved to Moscow. .According to the official version, due to the incompleteness of the construction of the complex, according to the unofficial version, due to the fact that the complex is located in Tsitsernakaberd, next to the monument to the Armenian Genocide, and raising the flag of Turkey that does not recognize the Genocide could have undesirable consequences.
