ArmInfo. Vahagn Khachaturyan has been elected Armenia's 5th president.
In the second ballot, 71 MPs, all the members of the dominant parliamentary faction Civil Contract, voted for him.
Last evening, Armenia's Parliament failed to elect Mr Khachaturuyan as Armenia's president in the first secret ballot. All of the 69 MPs that participated in the ballot voted for the only candidate. However, to be elected in the first ballot, the presidential candidate is to receive at least 81 votes, whereas the ruling party Civil Contract, which nominated Mr Khachaturyan, has only 71 seats in Armenia's Parliament. The opposition faction Armenia and With Honor boycotted the election.
Armenia's President Armen Sarkissian handed in his resignation on January 23.
