ArmInfo. The general essence of the position voiced at the last online press conference of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on defining borders and establishing peace with Azerbaijan leads to the need for coexistence with Azerbaijanis and Turks sooner or later. Chairman of the Conservative Party Mikayel Hayrapetyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"Pashinyan actually offers his version of coexistence with both Azeris and Turks. And, in principle, his thoughts are not new, they were also present in the Armenian political thought a century ago. In this light, I consider it necessary to display a persistent political will at the beginning of processes in this direction. That, it will be quite difficult for Armenia, which lost in the last year's war, "the politician thinks.
As for the process of demarcation of the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Hayrapetyan considers it necessary at least to secure the same borders as they were during the early USSR. In his opinion, as a result of such an approach, Yerevan will not be able to get tangible solutions here and now. However, in his opinion, taking into account the long-term nature of this process, the gradual deliverance of Armenia from the complex of defeat, as well as the rather rapid geopolitical transformations of the international level, time plays on Armenia.
According to Hayrapetyan, this is about gradual changes in both Russian-Turkish relations and Moscow's relations with the collective West. Which, in his opinion, opens up quite wide, objective opportunities for Yerevan to maneuver in order to advance its own national interests. The success of the latter, according to the politician, entirely depends on the level of political will and flight, the strength of thought of the current government.
Hayrapetyan considers the appointment of a special representative with the aim of normalizing relations with Turkey to be unambiguously the right step, with the correct implementation of which it will be possible to have positive expectations from this process, including the formation of Armenia as a regional geopolitical crossroads. The politician thinks that the possible threats and problems that may arise for Armenia as a result of the process of normalization of relations with Turkey are mainly economic and cultural. However, according to his forecasts, in case of inept actions of Yerevan, geopolitical threats may be added to them. That can already deprive Armenia of any development prospects.
"We should also understand the interest of all centers of power in the establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations. It is also clear that in today's rapidly globalizing world, not only the interests of Armenia and Turkey collide and harmonize in this process. In this light, we should by no means confuse the undoubtedly necessary and important caution with cowardice. Ankara, of course, with the support of Baku, will continue to insist on its own preconditions with regard to Yerevan. But we must also understand that interests in the world do not end with Turkish interests at all. There are many other interests that we can quite successfully compare with ours, "summed up Hayrapetyan.
