ArmInfo.Political terror against Yerevan ex-mayor Hayk Marutyan could pave the way for the formation of political forces of a new quality, the public and political figure Garegin Miskaryan told ArmInfo as he commented on Mr Marutyan`s resignation from the post of Yerevan mayor.
"We can see the preliminary conditions for this scenario to unfold, and people actively working on it. And I am hopeful that next year the work will gain momentum and the results will not be long in coming. The improvement of the political environment through the formation of new political forces that would be adequate in terms of quality and essence is vitally important. I myself associate the enactment of this scenario with public initiatives," Mr Miskaryan said.
In this context, he stressed that the formation of democratic political forces in Armenia is a task to be accomplished by Armenian society alone, as no one is going to export democracy - and Armenian society must realize this way has no alternative. The politician highlights the importance of formation of any least two healthy political forces, which would assume political responsibility for leading the country toward democracy.
Elaborating on the political terror, Mr Miskaryan said it is a follow-up to the terror against the elected heads of local government bodies. According to him, the authorities` initiative is aimed at strengthening their positions before the next elections, which will enable the Civil Contract party to employ government agencies for reassuming power in the future.
"Pashinyan and his circles are well aware of their declining ratings and public support, which makes the ruling party`s victory in the next elections impossible. This is the cause of their desire to do away with Marutyan at any cost, as independent local government is one of the guarantees of formation of democratic society. Meanwhile, the absence of independent courts and of a radically reformed Election Code and the current situation involving local government bodies is evidence of Armenia departing from democratic principles - even of the authorities` moving toward authoritarianism," Mr Miskaryan said. According to him, the basis for this transformation of Armenia`s ruling political force is Premier Nikol Pashinyan`s populist and demagogic essence - he initially was not a political figure or champion of a democratic state. Armenia`s premier is not a bearer of any ideology and he personally confirmed it by rejecting any "-isms." This last fact destroys all the hopes of society for any ideological changes in Armenia, as the Pashinyan-ruled Armenia has no ideology.
