ArmInfo. Unlike Brussels, Moscow can also offer the parties to the conflict, military-political solutions and scenarios for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Vladimir Evseev, Head of Caucasus Department of the CIS Institute told ArmInfo, commenting on the Pashinyan - Aliyev upcoming meeting scheduled for December 15, is in Brussels.
" In fact, this is the strong position of Russia. I would also like to highlight Moscow's interest in a complete and final settlement of the conflict between Armenia and AzerbaijanIt is important to note that the Russian Federation acts as an international mediator in this process, and not as a supporter of any party. And yes, it is Moscow that today remains the only player capable of reaching at least some compromises in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, "he stressed.
Evseev characterizes the current processes between Yerevan and Baku through the mediation of Moscow as a search for attempts at economic cooperation and unblocking of transport corridors. However, other global players and regional forces, according to him, are not helping Russia in all this. Moreover, the expert sees attempts of a rather strong influence by Turkey on Azerbaijan, as well as by the United States, France and Great Britain on Armenia, with the sole purpose of weakening Russia's influence in the South Caucasus.
Nevertheless, despite all the complexity of his own situation, despite the consolidated external pressure from Washington, Paris and London, the same Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to Evseev, is still ready to go by looking for a solution to issues with Azerbaijan. According to the expert, the situation in the region and the pressure that is being exerted on him by the Armenian society pushes Pashinyan to such a tendency to compromise. And now it is important that Baku also expresses its readiness for this compromise.
"We understand the impossibility of avoiding the aggravation of the situation around Karabakh. However, if a working mechanism is created for delimitation and demarcation of borders following the meeting of the leaders of the three countries in Sochi, it will be possible to reduce tension at least on the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The situation in Karabakh will still periodically escalate , but it is fundamentally important that in Sochi the parties managed to go beyond economic relations and discuss not only unblocking transport corridors, but also creating a delimitation and demarcation mechanism. But it is not yet clear how and when it will work, "the expert concluded.
