ArmInfo. Sooner or later, taking into account the general situation in the region, as well as the prospects of unblocking regional communications, negotiations in all problematic areas of Armenian-Turkish relations will become a necessity. Fyodor Lukyanov, Research Director of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, told ArmInfo.
"Russia has publicly voiced its proposals for mediation in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey. And, in my opinion, Armenia should have long ago started to pursue a proactive policy in all possible and promising vectors. After all, a military defeat in last year's war should not be considered the end of the world for Armenia at all. I think that Yerevan should try to cover the damage done to the country in the diplomatic field, "he stressed.
Earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry, during discussions with Russian colleagues, informed about Yerevan's readiness to normalize relations with Ankara. On November 25, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, voiced the Russian Federation's readiness to assist this process, stressing the interest and efforts of Moscow towards the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations.
Assessing today's Turkey as one of the most complex regional states, the analyst, in this light, sees the need for a careful calculation of any step taken by Yerevan in the direction of Ankara. In the context of the prospects for changes in Turkish policy towards Armenia, Lukyanov recalled that Erdogan's Turkey rarely changes its attitudes in relations even with major powers. In his opinion, in the light of the absence of real progress around the Turkish vision of a peace treaty and the unblocking of communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan, it is rather difficult to predict the prospects for the establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations.
"As for the position and intentions of the Armenian leadership, they seem to be hoping for a solution with Turkey, which will not be connected with Ankara's relations with Baku, I can assume that with the active mediation of the West. However, the extreme coordination of the maximalist positions of Ankara and Baku has already created a rather difficult, if not a dead-end situation in the negotiations. But given the absence of preconditions on the part of Yerevan, which in turn expects a similar position from Ankara, we should wait for the very process between Armenia and Turkey. The real prospects of the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation can become clearer only with its beginning, "the Russian analyst summed up.
