ArmInfo.Russia's failure to fulfill its obligations assumed by Moscow under the 1997 Treaty with Armenia now has absolutely the same reasons as failure to fulfill its obligations in the past - Russia has simply not been a strategic ally of Armenia for a long time.
And it is extremely important to understand that this state of affairs is in no way conditioned by the relations of Armenia's leadership with Moscow. Sociologist Karen Sargsyan expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"This is due to the changes in Russian policy that took place as a result and after the famous Munich speech of Russian President Putin in 2007. This was followed by the well-known actions of Russia in Georgia and Ukraine for several years. I do not know for what reasons the current Russian elite considers it permissible for itself to neglect the agreements it has concluded at the international level. But since 2014, when the Russian Federation simply forgot about the existence of as many as three interstate treaties with Ukraine and carried out the secession of Crimea, it became finally clear that Armenia should definitely not expect much from treaties with the Russian Federation, "he said.
In this light, sociologist described as completely groundless the expectations of a certain part of the Armenian society according to which " at least, Russia may still save Armenia, from the Turkish yataghan at the last moment ". And this is also due to the low level of awareness of the Armenian society, for which no small "merit", unfortunately, belongs to the Armenian mass media. For example, the presentation of the entire flow of international information from the news feeds of Russian colleagues, moreover, without any filtering.
The current dissatisfaction and even indignation of the Armenian society with the de facto inaction of the strategic ally in the light of another act of military aggression by Azerbaijan against Armenia, the sociologist explains by the inconsistency of the current hopes and current realities in the society. Expectations of salvation from a savior in the foundation of which initially there was not a single grain of rationality, if only because Bolshevik Russia never saved anyone in its entire history.
"First of all, we need to understand for ourselves one thing that is extremely clear for Russia itself - Russia has no allies. Russia only has partners. In this particular case, it is Erdogan's Turkey, with which Putin's Russia has a common and very specific interest in squeezing the West out of the entire Black Sea region. And projecting the joint actions of the Russian Federation and Turkey in the region, in general, on the situation around Armenia, everything finally becomes clear. And starting from the current moods in our society, we have to admit that the progressive decline in sympathy towards the Russian Federation and the formation of anti-Russian sentiments in Armenia has become irreversible. This is neither good nor bad - this is a fact, " the sociologist summed up.
