ArmInfo. I think that, sooner or later, a meeting between Nikol Pashinyan, Vladimir Putin and Ilkham Aliyev will take place, and a document will certainly be signed, Mikael Hayrapetyan, Chairman of the Conservative Party of Armenia, told ArmInfo.
"I do not think we can ever have any positive expectations of that meeting. However, it is important that we are not going to face any tragic consequences. The West's efforts have driven the Russian-Turkish project into certain limits, and Moscow's positions have seriously weakened over the last year, since the end of the 44-days war. As a result, Russia is unable to keep its promises to Ankara. And this all has greatly strengthened Armenia's potential to oppose the plans against us," he said.
In this context the politician believes that it is not at all Russia's own choice to be ready for participating in the Turkish 3+3 project and Russia is most unlikely to take any effective steps to implement it. Mr Hayrapetyan regards the 3+3 project as a present-day counterpart of and follow-up to the illegal and anti- Armenian Treaty of Kars. In this context he noted that 100 years ago the world turned a blind eye to Kars to make Turkey the guard along the frontier with Soviet Russia. Present-day Russia is, according to the politician, too far from being a re-arising empire, the status it had back in 1921. Similarly, Turkey has lost its functions of frontier guard.
According to Mr Hayrapetyan, the 3+3 is supposed to bring calamities to Armenia, which could be tantamount to the calamities caused by the Treaty of Kars. In this context, the politician regards Yerevan's unwillingness to clearly state its stance on the 3+3 as absolutely right as, he thinks, time is in Armenia's favor. However, silence alone will not remedy the situation, and it is high time for Armenia to present its own project to the world.
"All this requires that our authorities and opposition forces show more reason and discernment. And, by and large, I welcome the opposition's attempts to oppose the Russian-Turkish projects by holding rallies. But if the only goal of these steps is to seize power in Armenia, such attempts will cause nothing but aversion. We can see that Armenia's parliamentary opposition is not at all against the proposals Armenia is receiving from Moscow and Ankara. The most radical opposition groups have the full right to present themselves as an alternative to both the authorities and other opposition forces. The question is Armenian society's ability to perceive the ideas and methods of radical opposition. We all could be convinced of that after the early parliamentary elections half a year ago," Hayrapetyan said.
