ArmInfo. The remoteness and lack of sea and land routes are an obstacle to trade and economic cooperation between Armenia and India. Minister of External Affairs of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated on October 13 in Yerevan at a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, referring to the security environment in the South Caucasus.
In his words, Armenia and India are members of the international transport corridor, which has prospects in terms of communications.
"We discussed with Mr. Mirzoyan Armenia's interest in using the port of Chabahar in Iran, developed by India. We discussed the possibility of using it as an international transport hub. We can also consider other projects. The possibility of opening flights was discussed," the Indian Foreign Minister said, adding that a trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union is currently being discussed.
At the same time, answering the question about the advantages of the Chabahar port, Jaishankar expressed his conviction that the development of the port would contribute to the North-South international corridor, create new land routes, more efficient than the existing sea routes.
"This will open up new opportunities for economic progress. The port in Iran, which India is developing, opens on the one hand the way to the Caucasus, on the other to Central Asia. This is part of the initiative we are working on with Russia," the Minister summed up.
