ArmInfo., Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is mainly pursuing a political line aimed at withdrawing Armenia from the field of Russian influence, albeit very slowly, with great reservations. Leader of the European Party of Armenia Tigran Khzmalyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"I understand perfectly well that a certain part of our society doubts not only Pashinyan's ability to lead Armenia towards the free world, but also his very intentions. Many people believe that Pashinyan is unconditionally loyal to Russia and pursues a pro-Russian policy. I believe that we can and must help our government in making a difficult, dangerous, but necessary civilizational choice between Russia and the West," he said.
According to Khzmalyan's estimates, in reality Pashinyan is very slowly, often not showing the proper consistency, very carefully, but he is leading Armenia to the West, from the CSTO and the EAEU to NATO and the EU. And, pushing the government in this process is a principled goal for his party. Noting that politics is, first of all, actions, the politician stressed that for 9 months already Moscow has not been able to get a signature from Yerevan with consent to legitimize the main goals of Russia and Turkey not only in Artsakh, but also in the Syunik region of Armenia.
In this light, he also noted the enormous political, diplomatic, and now financial assistance from the West: the US and the EU to Armenia. In this context, the politician highlighted the periodic visits of the US Ambassador to Syunik, the unprecedented activity of the French President and the unprecedented financial assistance of the EU to Armenia. In Khzmalyan's opinion, it is necessary to understand that all this support for Armenia is primarily conditioned by the interests of the West itself, for which Armenia is an open door to Iran.
"The main thing for us in all this is the complete coincidence of the interests of Armenia with the interests of the collective West. And if Armenia pursues a restrained, well-considered, careful policy aimed at countering the challenges to our statehood, we will certainly achieve success. The words remain just words, and the main thing is that there are still no tragic, irrevocable actions for Armenia. I think that this is also the result of the efforts of the West. Armenia's exit from the orbit of Russian influence is inevitable. And this will not happen for the first time. And this will not even happen at our request, but as a result of the desire of Russia itself, under the burden of its own problems," Khzmalyan summed up.
