On July 27, 2021, by the decree of President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian, Secretary General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Boris Sahakyan was awarded the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
To recall, by the decision of Nikol Pashinyan, former Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Vahagn Melikyan, who was appointed to this position by him on May 22, 2018, was released on July 19 of this year. Back in February 2021, the media reported that Melikyan would be removed from office due to corruption schemes. It was noted that it was the Foreign Ministry Secretary General who spread the news on the possible appointment of head of the "My Step" faction, Lilit Makunts, as the US Ambassador, with the aim of causing public discontent and disrupting this appointment.
