ArmInfo. Azerbaijan's prosecution of Armenian Prisoners of war on illegal border crossing charges is a breach of Geneva Convention III. (Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, 1949, Ed. note). Giorgi Gogia, Associate director of the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch in Europe and Central Asia Division, Human Rights Watch, wrote on his Twitter microblog.
In particular, he stressed that the captured combatants should have been afforded PoW status and returned after hostilities ended.
Referring to Article III of the Geneva Convention, the human rights activist emphasized; 'Members of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict, as well as militias or volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, operating in or outside their own territory:"
It should be noted that on July 23, the illegal trial over 13 Armenian prisoners of war in cases initiated on trumped-up charges ended in Azerbaijan. The Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced 13 Armenian prisoners of war to 6 years in prison.
In addition, on July 28, a verdict was passed in the criminal case of David Davtyan and Gevorg Sujyan, accused by "Azerbaijani justice" "in espionage against Azerbaijan". The latter were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
