ArmInfo.Today the European Court of Justice announced another decision regarding Azerbaijan. The ECHR recorded that in 2009-2011 Azerbaijan tortured and illegally imprisoned Artur Badalyan, who got lost and ended up on Azerbaijani territory. Head of the office of the Armenian representative to the ECHR Liparit Drmeyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"The European Court ordered Azerbaijan to pay Badalyan 30 thousand euros as compensation for non- material damage. It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan continues to violate the rights of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians," he wrote.
In the verdict of the ECHR, published on the website of the court, it is noted that the applicant disappeared on May 9, 2009 when he went to the village of Navur to pick mushrooms and was taken prisoner by Azerbaijani troops. His whereabouts were not known to his family and the Armenian authorities until November 5, 2010, when the International Committee of the Red Cross registered him as a prisoner. Thereafter, ICRC representatives periodically visited the complainant until 17 March 2011, when he was returned as part of a prisoner exchange.
It also describes the tortures that Badalyan was subjected to during his 22 months in Azerbaijani captivity.
