ArmInfo. The level of confidence that the Armenian society has endowed the current government for the second time obliges it to take steps as soon as possible towards solving security problems. Human rights activist Artur Sakunts expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"Taking into account the serious restrictions imposed on Armenia by the trilateral statement of November 9 last year, as well as the actual destruction of our country's subjectivity through this document, the government must look for sources of ensuring the country's security outside this document, as well as outside any trilateral agreements, bilateral treaties with Russia and, of course, the CSTO. These agreements are not promising for Armenia. To be convinced of the obviousness of this, it is enough to look at the court comedies against our prisoners in Azerbaijan," he stressed.
Within the framework of the existing security system, the main threats to the security, rights and life of Armenian citizens, according to the human rights activist, are not being addressed. The Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani military in the territory of Armenia evidence this. In this light, he recalled that the unconditional return of all prisoners of war was confirmed by the same statement of November 9, but even after eight months from the date of its signing, the Armenian prisoners of war are still in Azerbaijan.
Moreover, according to Sakunts, against the background of obvious non-fulfillment one of the points of the statement, Azerbaijan is illegally prosecuting Armenian prisoners of war. By inflicting suffering and damage to their sense of dignity, not only for them, but also for their families and friends. All these facts, according to the human rights activist, destroy the significance of the trilateral statement in the eyes of the Armenian society, creating distrust in relation to its initiators and guarantors of its implementation.
"Thus, within the framework of this statement, Armenia is being held hostage, just as our guys are being held hostage in Azerbaijan. And all the opposite arguments are untenable, first of all, due to the fact that they obviously pursue only one single goal - to continue to hold Armenia. Accordingly, the international subjectivity of our country can be restored only if Armenia breaks out of this impasse. In this particular case, through an appeal to the UN Security Council. It is clear that this scenario is extremely undesirable for the Kremlin. But another way to ensure security and the ruling force simply does not have the protection of the rights of the citizens of Armenia, "Sakunts summed up.
