ArmInfo. Early elections without the resignation of the current government are unlikely to lead to the outcome of the internal political crisis, which proceeds from the interests of the state. President of Yerevan Press Club Boris Navasardyan expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"The fact is that only parliamentary elections held at least at the level of the December 2018 elections can contribute to the relaxation of the current internal political situation. However, unfortunately, the current situation objectively does not allow us to hold elections of this level. The reason is obvious - the current government will try, if possible, to use the administrative resource in the elections, "he is convinced. The former government and the forces gathered around it, in turn, according to the expert, will use their financial resources in the elections and, accordingly, leverage in the form of large-scale distribution of bribes in the elections. Taking into account the very low controllability of state institutions, election commissions, law enforcement agencies and courts, according to his forecasts, will hardly be able to prevent various violations during the elections.
Another factor giving, according to Navasardyan, predictability, if not the outcome of the elections, then the conditions of their holding, is the coronavirus pandemic. In such conditions, one should not expect active participation of international observers in the elections in Armenia, in his opinion. Meanwhile, it is the latter that are also a rather important circumstance in the process of ensuring control over the conduct of elections.
Thus, the holding of early elections in such conditions, according to the YPC President, not only will not bring the resolution of the internal political crisis closer, but will also nullify the democratic achievements of Armenia in 2018. The latter, according to his forecasts, will have not only internal political, but also international consequences for the country. And the worst thing in all this can be the disappearance of all positive ideas about Armenia as a young, democratic and legal state.
