ArmInfo. The speeches of the ex-presidents of Armenia Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sargsyan say one thing, while the facts say something completely different. A similar opinion was expressed to ArmInfo by the chairman of the Public Council of Armenia Stepan Safaryan.
“I can say that neither one nor the other has ever sought to resolve the conflict around Artsakh on the basis of compromises, being supporters of maintaining the status quo. Kocharian and Sargsyan were well aware that the implementation of any of the settlement options existing all these years contradicted their own interests. After all, both came to power, removing Levon Ter-Petrosyan from it in 1998 on the basis of maximalist approaches to the settlement of the conflict, "he stressed. Based on these realities, the analyst assesses the entire strategy of Kocharian and Sargsyan on Artsakh as maintaining the status quo throughout both ten-year terms of their legislature. This is evidenced by the analysis of the policies implemented by both presidents in the field of defense and international relations. Everything was aimed at delaying the status quo, and not at a conceptual solution to the problem.
Today, the ex-presidents, according to Safaryan's assessments, do their best to avoid recognizing these realities, which is primarily due to their desire to delay the inevitable war and toss it into the pocket of their successors. Meanwhile, society today already knows very well that, starting from a certain period, Moscow has also become interested in changing the status quo. On the same days of the 44-day war, the Russian president and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs repeatedly and quite unambiguously stated this.
As a result, today Kocharyan and Sargsyan, according to Safaryan, cannot admit their own long-term efforts and all kinds of tricks to delay the inevitable war already then. Having admitted this, they will simply confirm the version already existing in society, according to which, by delaying the war, they both only postponed it to 2020.
"Of course, all this seriously worries them. Accordingly, the same Serzh Sargsyan today is trying with all his might to present himself as a supporter of a compromise settlement of the conflict. However, the facts indicate the opposite. , he did not inform the public about this. He did not even try to present the Kazan version to the public. And he never spoke about the essence of negotiations with the public, implying a compromise, "concluded the head of the Public Council.
