ArmInfo. The involvement of the railway through the territory of Armenia is of a political, rather than economic nature for Azerbaijan. Head of the Union of Local Producers Vazgen Safaryan shares this point of view.
At the discussions on the issue of unblocking transport communications in the region, he noted that the main goal of Baku is to connect Nakhichevan along a corridor through the territory of Armenia with Azerbaijan. In this context, the Armenian authorities should hold flexible and meaningful negotiations in order to build an alternative one, Kars-Gyumri-Vanadzor-Dilijan-Agstafa-Derbent, in parallel with the construction of this railway. Moreover, the Meghri corridor, as such, will not exist, there will be only a transition point. In Soviet times, about 2 thousand carriages entered Nakhichevan through the territory of Armenia, which was a serious help for the development of the Armenian economy. But a lot has changed since then, not even the Iran-Armenia railway, (400 km long), has been built.
