ArmInfo. The 44-day war, in my opinion, was simply inevitable since both our activities and the activities of our enemies over the past decades have been aimed precisely at it. Former Ambassador of Armenia to Syria, orientalist, Professor David Hovhannisyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"Today, the authorities blame the opposition for the outcome of the war, the opposition blames the authorities. But in reality everyone is guilty. The position taken by the ruling class of Armenia, starting since Levon Ter-Petrosyan's resignation, has been, one way or another, aimed at resuming the war, and this is only part of the trouble. Against the background of such a position, all these years there was no tangible preparation for this very war. Meanwhile, it was our ill-preparedness for war that became one of its most important reasons," he said.
Noting that the desire for peace a priori dictates readiness for war, the professor emphasized that Armenia was not preparing for war due to insufficient attention to geopolitical, global transformations, unprofessional attitude towards perturbations in the alignment of forces in the international arena, etc. That is why the Armenian people turned out to be completely unprepared for what happened.
Against this background, Hovhannisyan assesses all the accusations of the opposition as biased and unfounded. He recalled that all of today's oppositionists ruled Armenia themselves at different times and did not come up with decisions that would make this war impossible. The professor, in this light, highlighted the need for economic, political, military strengthening of the country. Strengthening the international positions of Armenia, including through the creation of a pan-Armenian military system. "In the end, peace is the most important guarantee of security. And, among other things, it is achieved through mutual compromises. For which no one was ready all these years. The political class did not make any effort to prepare our society for such compromises. And of course, the unprofessional management of the country over the past 2.5 years has led to war, "he stressed.
Hovhannisyan sees a way out of the situation in the earliest possible initiation of negotiations with various centers of power. In his opinion, there are many international guarantees, to which Armenia should immediately direct all available energy and potential. The authorities, in turn, need to prepare the country for fair elections, which must be held exclusively in conditions of equal opportunities for all political forces. "However, these elections should take place only after the end of the current transition period. Today we have no right to go to further major destabilization of the situation. No one has the right to do so. Today we are clearly not living in a period when one can speak the language of ultimatums. This would be the most dangerous thing that can be imagined. And we all need to avoid further shocks, "Hovhannisyan summed up.
