ArmInfo. The war in Artsakh is capable of escalating into the World War III. A similar opinion was expressed to ArmInfo by the former head of the Artsakh Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Arman Melikyan.
"Such an apocalyptic scenario will become possible if Turkey initiates hostilities directly on the border with Armenia. In this case, the intervention of Russia and Iran will become inevitable and turn the entire current geopolitical combination to the level of a world war," Melikyan predicts.
The essence of what is happening, according to the diplomat, is the gradual but steady movement of the wave generated by the "Arab spring" of violence to the East. As a result, this wave has already reached the borders of the South Caucasus. According to Melikyan's estimates, many rather serious international players have a great interest in pushing this wave to the East.
This fairly large geopolitical project, according to his estimates, is aimed at changing the very political image of Eurasia. Its target is the entire vast region, and one of its goals is the revitalization of the Turkic world. In this process, Turkey is assigned the role of main driver. In this light, the diplomat considers Armenia's task to fully ensure its own interests.
"In light of and taking into account all of the above, both Russia and Iran are potential allies of Armenia in these games. Especially considering that in the event of an increase in the scale of the current war, Iran may well become a target. It should be realized that Turkey's advance will be accompanied by the retreat of Russia. Meanwhile, Russia has nowhere to retreat. Since one more step back will turn this retreat into an endless one, "the diplomat predicts.
Commenting on the current situation at the front, Melikyan noted the breakdown of the enemy's belligerence, the absence of significant achievements in the war provoked by Azerbaijan, as well as huge human losses and losses of military equipment. All this, according to the diplomat, has already led to the transfer of power in Azerbaijan from Aliyev to Turkey. And according to Melikyan's forecasts, the Azerbaijani people will feel the consequences of this for a long time. For Armenia and Artsakh, the war provided an opportunity to solve such issues that the Armenian republics could not solve in peacetime.
