UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres deeply regrets that, despite the decisive and persistent appeals of the international community, including the head of the UN and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict continue to fight. This was announced at a briefing in New York by UN Press Secretary Stephane Dujarric, answering a journalist's question.
"The Secretary General reaffirms his position: this conflict cannot be resolved by military means," the statement said. The UN head is convinced that the continuation of hostilities only leads to further suffering, and a long-term solution to the conflict can only be achieved through dialogue.
The Secretary General recalls the recent statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and calls on all parties to respect international law and international humanitarian law. The Secretary General also reminds the leaders of both countries of the need to protect the civilian population and civilian infrastructure under any circumstances, the UN official website reports.
