ArmInfo. The Armenian government received a proposal to rename the Zvartnots airport in honor of Charles Aznavour. For its part, the government asked the Public Council to express its position on this issue. Chairman of the Public Council Stepan Safaryan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
Safaryan informed that the <Aznavour> Foundation and son of the world famous chansonnier, Nicolas Aznavour, applied to the Armenian government with a proposal to rename the Zvartnots airport. The <Aznavour> Foundation also said that the authors of the initiative are fans of Charles Aznavour's work. Given the epidemiological situation in the republic, discussions by the Public Council will be conducted remotely. A package of documents received from the Government of the Republic of Armenia was sent to all members of the Public Council; in addition, to receive opinions and comments from the public on this issue, the proposal to rename the airport is also posted on the Public Council's Facebook page.
Zvartnots International Airport acts as the main international airport of Armenia and is Yerevan's main international transport hub. It is the busiest airport in the country.. In 2001, the Armenian Government signed an agreement on airport management for a period of 30 years with the Argentine company "Corporation America", which belongs to Argentinean Armenian descent Eduardo Ernekian. Under the agreement, the company renovated and expanded the airport; new terminals were opened in the 2007th and 2011th years. The airport is designed to serve large aircraft, such as the An-225, Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A380.
In 2019, the passenger flow at the Zvartnots airport exceeded 3 million, while in 2018 this figure amounted to 2,690,727 passengers.
