ArmInfo. Former Minister of Justice of Armenia David Harutyunyan criticized the upcoming constitutional referendum.
On February 12, in an interview with reporters, he noted that if Constitutional Court dissolves after referendum, negative consequences will last for decades. Harutyunyan explained his position by saying that the new judges of the Constitutional Court will be appointed for a term of 12 years, and then the parliamentary majority will again have the opportunity to once again change the entire composition of the court. Meanwhile, according to him, in other countries of the world the composition of the vessels does not immediately change, since this leads to instability. Thus, in the opinion of the former minister, the higher authorities set themselves the task of forming the humble Constitutional Court.
To note, David Harutyunyan was a MP of the National Assembly from the Republican Party of Armenia. Current head of the Constitutional Court Hrayr Tovmasyan was also a member of the same party.
To recall, on February 9, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian scheduled a referendum on constitutional amendments on April 5 this year. Earlier, on February 6, the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia decided to submit draft amendments to the Constitution to the referendum. 88 MPs voted for this decision, against -15. It is a question of introducing amendments to Article 213 of the Constitution, providing for the dissolution of the Constitutional Court.
