ArmInfo. Since the 1990s, Israel has been trying to establish diplomatic relations with post-Soviet countries, including Armenia. However, Yerevan simply did not respond to our appeals, and the strong promotion of Israel in Azerbaijan, but not in the Armenian direction is the choice of Yerevan. Well-known Israeli political scientist and public figure Avigdor Eskin expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"After the revolution, the situation in Armenia changed. The new government of Armenia expressed interest in establishing full-fledged relations with Israel. There is already some progress, however, on the other hand, national interests impede to realize these intentions. Complex geopolitical conditions force Yerevan to build relations with Israel's opponent, Iran. In turn, Israel continues military supplies to the Aliyev regime, despite calls by Armenia not to sell weapons to Azerbaijan. Nevertheless, Yerevan and Jerusalem are trying to find common goals, "he noted.
According to Eskin, the same potential for strengthening humanitarian ties between Armenia and Israel is enormous. Certainly, close political cooperation between the two countries is possible, despite the different approaches on regional issues. And today there are all prerequisites for long-term friendly relations with Israel. <Israel has been ready for this since 1991. The ball is in Armenia's court, however, this is actively hampered by Armenian circles that fanatically hate Israel, up to and including accusations of Jews in the organization of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, "the Israeli political scientist emphasized. "As regards Iran, we understand the vital interests of Armenia related to the southern neighbor. Everyone should take into account the semi-enclosed position of Armenia. In this light, in my opinion, for the time being we should treat the Armenian-Iranian interaction with understanding. In turn, Yerevan should treat to certain aspects of Israel's cooperation with Azerbaijan with understanding, " Avigdor Eskin concluded.
