ArmInfo. On May 2, the Armenian government rejected the legislative initiative of an MP, which suggests excluding age discrimination in hiring.
As the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia Zaruhi Batoyan said, introducing the draft decision, a lawmaker of the parliament proposed amendments to the Labor Code of the Republic of Armenia. In particular, it is proposed to supplement the Labor Code, which will put a "taboo" on age restrictions when entering into an employment contract, except as required by law.
According to the Minister, the ministry at this stage is working towards eliminating discrimination, both on the basis of age, sex, religion, etc. At present, the Ministry of Labor proposes to leave the current provision unchanged until a full revision of all discriminatory approaches.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in his turn, stated that the government receives many messages of discriminatory attitude in the labor market. "Is there a need for a complete revision of the legislation?" He asked. In response, Zaruhi Batoyan noted that there is a need for establishing provisions that completely exclude discriminatory manifestations in an imperative manner.
