ArmInfo. The Armenian Foreign Ministry reacted to the statement of the ambassadors of the EU member states accredited in Armenia on the situation around the LGBT community in the republic.
Thus, the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan noted that the Foreign Ministry is familiar with the statement of the embassies of the EU countries and the EU delegation in Armenia, which expressed concern about the discussions in Armenian society regarding the LGBT community and recalls the international obligations of the RA.
The Government of the Republic of Armenia fully adheres to its commitments to protect and promote human rights. The nonviolent democratic revolution, which took place in Armenia, is the best evidence that human rights, generally, are effectively protected if they become part of a social consensus and are perceived as universal social and moral values.
Therefore, in this context, our international partners should demonstrate more respect and sensitivity towards the Armenian society and refrain from undue engagement in the public debate, even if they disagree with its tonality
We would like to remind that the principle of public morality is a part of international commitments on human rights and can not be ignored.
For its part, the authorities of the Republic of Armenia will not tolerate any illegal actions and will continue to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens. ", Naghdalyan noted.
Earlier, the EU Delegation to Armenia and the embassies of EU member states accredited in Armenia issued a statement expressing deep concern about a number of recent events in the country, in particular, serious threats to minorities and human rights defenders, including death threats. The EU recalled the international obligations undertaken by Armenia and called on all those who are committed to protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms to condemn such manifestations of hatred, and law enforcement agencies to take immediate steps to guarantee the physical safety of the citizens of Armenia, as well as to investigate the facts of alleged crimes against hate ground and identify those involved in this. It should be noted that the speech from the tribune of the Armenian parliament of transgender Lilit Martirosyan caused a rapid public response in Armenia. The society was divided into two camps - those who do not see anything reprehensible in this speech, and those who consider it unacceptable. Yesterday in front of the Armenian parliament building, a protest was held in defense of family values, the organizers and participants of which sharply condemned the Martirosyan's speech in parliament.
