ArmInfo.Compensation will receive not only the relatives of the victims of March 1, 2008, but also those citizens who received severe and moderate injuries during these events. On this April 5, at the meeting of the parliamentary commission on state and legal issues, the Minister of Justice of Armenia Artak Zeynalyan stated.
He noted that the relatives of the victims, as well as the citizens who received severe and moderate injuries during these events, will be able to submit to the Government applications for compensation within three years after the entry into force of this law.
In turn, Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Lena Nazaryan noted that the draft law has a great social and political importance. According to Nazaryan, before that, the state also provided assistance to the victims, but there was a differentiated approach to police and civilians. "Our bill is aimed at restoring justice. I don't want to give names, but I know that there were relatives of victims who received great support and continue to receive it, however, there are people who have not received anything," the Vice- Speaker emphasized. She also noted that the size, conditions, and the procedure for obtaining compensation will be determined by the government's decision. To note, on March 1, 2008, after the presidential elections in Armenia, large-scale protests were held under the leadership of the opposition in the person of the first President of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosian. As a result of the protests, clashes with police officers occurred, resulting in the death of 10 people. Former President of Armenia Robert Kocharian was arrested on charges of overthrowing the constitutional order in 2008.
