


ArmInfo.October 27, 1999 is a great tragedy in the history of the Armenian people, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian told reporters in the Yerablur military pantheon on March 5.
"These events should be given a fair historical assessment," the Armenian President added. Answering to the journalist's remark on the legal assessment, Sarkissian assured that the legal assessment is also included in the historical assessment.
The President of Armenia congratulated everyone on Vazgen Sargsyan's birthday, stressing that he was one of the greatest people in the history of Armenia.
To recall, on October 27, 1999, the criminals broke into the meeting room of the parliament and shot members of the government and lawmakers. The victims of the terrorists were Speaker of the National Assembly Karen Demirchyan, Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Vice Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, Minister of Operational Affairs Leonard Petrosyan, deputies Armenak Armenakian, Henrikh Abrahamyan and Michael Kotanyan.
The trial of the perpetrators of the terrorist attack lasted from 2001 to 2003. 6 members of the group - the leader Nairi Hunanyan, his brother Karen Hunanyan, their uncle Vram Galstyan, Derenik Bedzhanyan, Edik Grigoryan and Ashot Knyazyan were sentenced to life imprisonment. Hamlet Stepanyan sentenced to 14 years in prison. The organizers of the terrorist act remain unknown to this day.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told reporters that, according to Armenian legislation, new circumstances should appear to resume the case on October 27.
