ArmInfo. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan and Acting Minister of Nature Protection Eric Grigoryan visited Ararat region and got acquainted with the works on improvement of the landfill in Ararat.
According to the press service of the Ministry, for the first time in Armenia a waste management infrastructure is being formed at a garbage dump. The Global Environment Facility in collaboration with the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) under the program <Using the best available technology or the best environmental methodology in the context of a project to reduce unintentional organic emissions from flammable sources funds this work".
Minister Eric Grigoryan noted that this infrastructure allows sorting garbage in the landfill, thereby solving the primary environmental goal, excluding the release of hazardous dioxins from incinerated waste. The separated plastic will be processed and can be used after processing organic waste.
The problem is relevant for our country, since in Armenia there are no facilities for remaking, recycling and incineration of waste, as well as specialized services for their disposal. The introduction of new landfills will require time and investment from the state, and the implemented program shows that it can be relatively small investments with more efficient management of old landfills in the case of available technologies, which drastically reduces key environmental problems.
Acting director of the NPO "Center for Monitoring the Environment and Information" Afanasi Lazarev, , presented the process and the results of the work done, stressing that no waste would be incinerated at this garbage dump.
As part of the implemented program, a plumbing line, a lighting system were built, ash was collected from dioxins rich in alkaline coatings that had been burned for many years, they were buried in a striated landfill zone, and a number of other environmental works were carried out.
