ArmInfo. Former Defense Minister of Artsakh Samvel Babayan has not yet decided whether he will return to his homeland after his release from arrest.
As Babayan stated in an interview with journalists after leaving the prison, he will go to Karabakh, if the current authorities of Armenia deem it necessary. "However, I believe that the situation in Artsakh and around it is currently dangerous, let's give the republic continued stable development until 2020 (in 2020, presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in Artsakh), if at all possible in the current circumstances," said Babayan.
Babayan was released today under the guarantee of a number of deputies from Tsarukyan and Elk blocks. He was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment on charges of attempting to smuggle Igla MPGM into Georgia from Georgia. Babayan himself did not admit the charges and stated that his case was fabricated for political reasons.
Earlier, he was tried on charges of organizing an attempt on the ex-president of Artsakh Arkady Ghukasyan. In addition, his name was exaggerated in various financial frauds, for which reason Babayan was forced to stay out of the republic for a long time.
