ArmInfo.Armenian President Armen Sarkissian believes that he will be able to work with Nikol Pashinyan if the latter is elected prime minister of the country.
"If I worked with him on the square, I probably can work with him if he becomes prime minister. Our last meetings were very constructive. Young, really talented person who feels and controls emotions and thoughts, desires as young. And my role will be to give him advice in the light of my life experience and principles, if he wants it. In any case, the priority for me will be legality and the Constitution," he said in an interview to "Echo of Moscow".
At the same time, he said, the president will support the processes to fulfill Armenia's international obligations. "In your case, I can say friendly relations with Russia," Sargsyan said, stressing that Russian-Armenian relations are of a fundamental nature and they should not be destroyed in any case for many reasons, including military-political cooperation aimed at ensuring security of the Armenian state and people.
Answering the question, whose merit that the rallies in Armenia were of a peaceful nature, Sarkissian expressed conviction that this is a merit of the whole people. "Because there could be no demonstrations, revolutions -"corduroy", "plush" or some other, if the relevant authorities behaved differently. There were, however, rare cases when someone broke something but, on the other hand, it is necessary to pay tribute to the law enforcers, who behaved very correctly.
According to Sarkissian, it was possible to change the country by evolutionary development, and it was possible as it happened. "In a sense, this movement did not surprise me. We were surprised by the acceleration of the process: we are a small state, but a global nation, we have a huge potential to become a truly successful and dynamically developing country that looks to the future. For this it is necessary that the Armenians of the diaspora, using their experience and knowledge, apply them in their historical homeland. If they see the future, they will return," the Armenian President expressed his conviction.
Answering the question whether it is possible to consider his appearance at the rally on April 21 as an expression of sympathy for Pashinyan, Sarkissian said that his sympathies are on the side of the people. "If the people are in the square, I need to be there, if the people at the frontline - I need to be there. Recently, one of the journalists representing the Western media asked me about the possibilities of using the president's limited powers in the event that there were clashes. The Constitution, I did not write it, but when I agreed, I knew what I was going to do, I probably would have to stand between young people and the police, since there would probably be no other lever of influence," the Armenian President added.
