ArmInfo.A protest action was held in front of the Azerbaijani embassy in Washington, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Sumgayit pogroms.
According to the Armenian National Committee of America(ANCA), The action was organized by representatives of the Armenian community of the United States. The participants held banners bearing the inscriptions "Stop Aliyev", "Sumgait-30" and "Artsakh is Armenia", "Aliyev stop bombing civilians."
The pogroms in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait occurred on February 27-29, 1988, and were accompanied by massive violence against the Armenian population, robberies, murders, arson and destruction of property.
February 29, 1988 at a meeting of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee in Moscow, it was officially recognized that mass pogroms and murders in Sumgait were carried out on a national basis. However, as the materials of the Human Rights Center "Memorial" indicate, the absence of a timely investigation into the circumstances of the pogroms, the establishment and punishment of the guilty parties led to further escalation of the Karabakh conflict and new pogroms already in Kirovabad, Baku, Maragha.
