ArmInfo. The UN General Assembly on December 21 adopted a resolution calling not to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
128 countries, including Armenia, voted for the adoption of the resolution. Only nine states voted against the resolution: the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. Another 35 states abstained.
The resolution does not mention the US, but it says that all decisions on Jerusalem should be abolished. The text says that any decisions regarding the status of the city are considered void.
According to the UN Charter, the General Assembly's decision has a recommendatory, symbolic character and, unlike the decisions of the UN Security Council, is not binding.
It is noteworthy that on December 20, US President Donald Trump threatened to deprive the country of financial assistance that would support the UN resolution condemning the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "They take hundreds of millions and even billions of dollars from us and vote against us, and let them vote, we will save much on that." We do not care, "the US president said.
Recall that on December 6, Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv. This decision was condemned not only by the countries of the Islamic world, but also by a number of European states, stressing that this could provoke new clashes in the conflict zone.
