ArmInfo. Any attempts to oppose different integration vectors to each other and speculate on this contain serious threats to the Armenian statehood. Samvel Farmanyan, deputy head of the commission on European integration, said at the hearings in the Armenian parliament "On the beginning of the process of the denunciation of the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty by the Republic of Armenia" initiated by the opposition bloc "Elk".
According to him, it is not politically expedient to hold hearings in the parliament on the issue of Armenia's withdrawal from the EAEU right after the signing of the Agreement on a comprehensive and expanded partnership with the European Union. "History shows that any attempts to oppose different geopolitical poles for Armenia had tragic consequences, and now it is not expedient to do this," the deputy noted.
He stressed that Armenia today is the only country in the Eurasian space, which, being a strategic ally of Russia, signed such an agreement with the EU. "How can you criticize the foreign policy of Yerevan after that, it's very difficult to find such examples of cooperation today," the deputy concluded.
The head of the European Integration Commission, member of the Tsarukyan bloc Naira Zohrabyan stated that she is a supporter of the association of Armenia with the EU. According to her, the problems of Armenia are conditioned by the prevailing situation in the country, not by membership in the EAEU or by signing an agreement with the EU. In her opinion, the leadership of the republic sits idly by, instead of developing agriculture and exporting products to Russia after the introduction of sanctions against it by the EU.
"If almost all the imports in Armenia are carried out by 7 oligarchs alone, and there is no alternative, the EAEU is also to blame for that?" The fact that our officials are selling their 20% stake in Gazprom is also to blame for the EAEU?" That our citizens are leaving the country, since they can not find a job here, this is also probably the fault of the sole EAEU," Zohrabyan asked rhetorically.
The Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament from the Tsarukyan bloc, Mikael Melkumian, said that RA simply does not know how to correctly use its membership in the EAEU and does not take advantage of it. "I believe that there are advantages for Armenia both in that it is a member of the EAEU, and in that it signed a framework agreement with the EU. It is just necessary to be able to benefit from both structures," Melkumyan said.
He also stressed that Armenia should not oppose one structure to another. "For us, there are advantages in both structures, of course, it is difficult to be at the same time both in the Unified Energy System and in the EU, but if we had the opportunity, why not try to combine the advantages of these structures," he said
