ArmInfo.The US House of Representatives unanimously adopted resolution 354, which condemns violence against peaceful demonstrators near the residence of the Turkish Ambassador to Washington on May 16, 2017.
As the Armenian National Committee of America told ArmInfo, the resolution also calls for measures to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The resolution was adopted by 397 votes.
"Resolution 354 says that Congress strongly condemns the actions of Turkish security guards last month. At the same time, it demands that Turkey immediately lift diplomatic immunity from all those who participated in the attack on US citizens and law enforcement officials. Calls on the US State Department and the US Secret Service to review their security procedures and provide them to the Turkish side so that officials of this country clearly understood how their security groups should operate in the United States," the ANCA said.
At the same time, the resolution calls for bringing to justice all the perpetrators of the incident.
To note, on May 16 of the current year the Turkish embassy in Washington had a fight between supporters and opponents of the policy of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to eyewitnesses, Erdogan's supporters attacked participants in a peaceful demonstration protesting against Erdogan's visit to the United States. Among the participants of the rally were Armenians, Kurds, Yezidis and Assyrians. The fight was also attended by officials of the Embassy and Security Service of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As a result of the incident, 10 peaceful demonstrators suffered. The police managed to detain three persons suspected of violence. The incident caused a negative response in the social and political circles of the United States. In fact, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that he called the actions of Turkish law enforcers unacceptable and promised to bring to justice all those responsible. Ankara, in response to the actions and statements of Washington, summoned Serdar Kilik, his ambassador to the US, for a consultation.
