ArmInfo. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in 2012-16 Azerbaijan's arms purchase was 20 times as much as Armenia's purchase.
SIPRI experts say that Azerbaijan (with 4%) has joined the top five countries, where the major part of Russia's arms exports went in 2012-2016: India (38%), Vietnam (11%), China (11%) and Algeria (10%).
The United States and Russia remained the major exporters of military hardware in 2012-16 (with 56% joint share in global exports). The United States' share was 33% (leader among the arms suppliers). The key partners of the US were Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Turkey. Over the past few years, Washington supplied arms to at least 100 countries.
Russia ranked next with 23%. Russia's key partners were India, Vietnam and China. In 2012-16, Russia supplied arms to 50 countries.
China retained the third position with 6.2%, France was the fourth with 6% and Germany was the fifth with 5.6%. The volume of international transfers of major weapons has grown continuously since 2004 and increased by 8.4 per cent between 2007-11 and 2012-16, according to the new data on arms transfers published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Notably, transfers of major weapons in 2012-16 reached their highest volume for any five-year period since the end of the cold war. The flow of arms to Asia and Oceania and the Middle East increased between 2007-11 and 2012-16, while there was a decrease in the flow to Europe, America and Africa.
