ArmInfo. One should expect serious transformations in the Transatlantic ties and inside the European Union, according to Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Politics Magazine, Chairman of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy.
"The European model of integration and the Transatlantic ties have been exhausted today and I do not think Donald Trump's presidency in the US will facilitate the development of relations with the EU," Lukyanov says, adding that before Trump came to power Brussels had relied on Washington in settlement of the domestic problems of Europe, however, it has unexpectedly turned out that the US is not going to do that.
At the same time, the analyst thinks the prospects of the US-UK rapprochement on a new basis are quite an important factor, given the inevitability of the UK's withdrawal from the EU. He thinks London's return to the Anglo-Saxon tandem to look for its new place in international politics is much more likely today than it was a couple of years ago.
In the light of the latest European trends, Lukyanov expects the forces striving for restoration of relations with Russia to strengthen in Europe. This may happen by late 2017 when the political situation in Europe becomes clearer after the elections in Germany.
"Merkel will have to respond somehow to the growth of the influence of other forces, which inspires hope for changes in the Russian vector of the foreign policy of Berlin and Brussels. For now, Europe is trying to change nothing at all. It is simply afraid of changes in the light of the US foreign policy vectors," Lukyanov says.
