ArmInfo. The membership of countries such as Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in the EU will depend on the further development of these states, said Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Predicting the development of the EU over the next 30 years, Stubb noted that enlargement is the most important foreign policy task of the European Union. "My vision is this: in 30 years, the European Union will have approximately 40 member countries. That's 20% of all countries in the world. The membership structure will vary, as it already does today. Not everyone will use the euro as their currency. But the EU will be significantly larger than it is today. Personally, I would like to see all the countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova in it. Naturally, I would like to see Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. "Canada will be at least an associate member. As for other countries, such as Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, this will depend on their further development," Stubb noted, his words published on the Finnish President's website.
It should be noted that on January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a draft law on the beginning of the process of joining the European Union, proposed by the civic initiative "Eurakve." The draft was sent to the Armenian parliament for approval. On March 26, the country's parliament adopted it in the final reading and sent it to the president for signature. The document was signed on April 4 of that year. Moscow stated that Russia had conveyed to Armenia that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union was impossible.
