ArmInfo. Snap elections to the National Assembly of Armenia are inevitable, believes Gevorg Stepanyan, a member of the Mother Armenia faction of the Yerevan Council of Elders.
Reacting to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statement on possible snap elections in the country if a new constitution is not adopted, the politician expressed his conviction on his Facebook page that the current parliament does not reflect the will of Armenian citizens. "Snap elections to the National Assembly are inevitable. An illegitimate parliament does not reflect the will of the citizens of the Republic of Armenia. A clear example of this is the ignoring of the votes of three thousand citizens and the devaluation of almost 60,000 votes. Ultimately, the "privatization" of "five mandates," Stepanyan wrote.
It should be noted that during a briefing on October 22, the Armenian Prime Minister did not rule out holding early parliamentary elections if the parliamentary opposition is unable to vote for the decision to submit the new Constitution to a referendum.
As a reminder, following the results of the regular parliamentary elections in Armenia held on June 7, 2026, the Civil Contract party has a 3/5 majority, which allows it to pass constitutional laws and make appointments. However, the party does not have the 2/3 majority necessary to make direct amendments to the Armenian Constitution. It should be added that since the occupation of Artsakh, demands have frequently been heard from Baku to change the Armenian Constitution due to its alleged territorial claims against Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani side presents the fulfillment of these and other demands as a precondition for concluding a "peace treaty." -
