ArmInfo. The Wings of Tatev cableway celebrates its 16th anniversary. In this anniversary year, the Armenian project has been nominated for the fifth time for the prestigious international World Travel Awards in the World's Leading Cable Car Ride category.
According to a report received by ArmInfo, the previous four nominations resulted in victories: Wings of Tatev won the World Travel Awards in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025. This year, the project has the opportunity to bring Armenia the prestigious international award for the fifth time. In 2026, Wings of Tatev will Compete with cable cars in Brazil, Vietnam, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The cable car, created as part of the Tatev Revival program initiated by Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, was launched in 2010 and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest reversible cable car, at 5,752 meters. Sixteen years later, it continues to transport visitors from Armenia and around the world to Tatev – one of Armenia's most important historical and cultural centers, the Tatev Monastery Complex.
Over the past 16 years, the project has had a significant impact on the development of tourism in the region: tourist flow to Syunik has increased 17-fold, private investment has increased 11-fold, and approximately 40 new guesthouses have opened in Tatev, Goris, and nearby villages. Since the launch of the Tatev Wings ropeway, approximately 1.6 million passengers have used the services of the Tatev Wings.
Over the years, Tatev has also developed as a cultural and event tourism destination, hosting various festivals, events, and initiatives. A small souvenir shop has been operating at the Halidzor station for several years, offering Armenian-themed goods, as well as a line of Tatev Wings branded souvenirs.
Armenian residents and foreign visitors can support Tatev Wings and help the project move closer to its fifth victory. Voting will run until October 30, 2026.
Tatev Wings ropeway The cable car was built as part of the Tatev Revival program, which united the efforts of thousands of benefactors, builders, and volunteers. The program's goal was not only to build the cable car but also to restore the Tatev Monastery Complex, promote the community's socioeconomic development, and improve infrastructure.
Proceeds from the Wings of Tatev project are directed toward the restoration of the Tatev Monastery Complex and the development of the Tatev community.
