


ArmInfo. Former UN Deputy Secretary-General Benon Sevan, who dedicated much of his life to serving the UN and preserving Armenian cultural heritage, has passed away at the age of 90. He also represented the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU).
According to Cyprus Inform, Benon Sevan passed away on October 5. The AGBU called Sevan an outstanding leader, mentor, and tireless defender of Armenian heritage, noting that he became practically a member of the family for several generations of Armenians in Cyprus.
Benon Sevan was born in 1937 in Nicosia to Armenian parents who miraculously escaped the Genocide. He was educated at the renowned Melgonian Armenian School. He then moved to New York, where he received an excellent education at Columbia University. He has worked at the UN since 1965. He has held the highest positions, including Deputy Secretary-General. He has led UN missions in the most dangerous spots – Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and western Indonesia. He miraculously survived the terrorist attack in Baghdad, when extremists detonated a bomb at the UN office.
