ArmInfo. The European Commission is not offering special support packages for countries that do not have candidate status for EU accession, including Armenia, said European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
"In this pre-accession review, we are not talking about special support packages. This is a broad roadmap for us within the European Union to prepare ourselves and signal to candidate countries that we are ready: if they fulfill their obligations, we will fulfill ours," Kos said, responding to a question about the possibility of Armenia's early integration, RIA Novosti reports.
However, the European Commissioner did not specify whether Yerevan would be able to access the proposed new integration mechanisms before receiving official candidate status. Instead, Kos recalled current areas of cooperation, noting that Armenia is the only country with which the EU is discussing visa liberalization.
Kos also pointed to the trade support Brussels provides to Yerevan, allowing 80% of Armenian products to be exported to the EU duty-free, and mentioned a special economic package for the country's economic development.
Armenia is not currently a candidate for EU membership, and the deep integration mechanisms proposed by the European Commission in the energy, transport, and security sectors are intended for candidate countries.
It should be noted that on January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a draft law on the start of the accession process to the European Union, proposed by the "Eurakve" civic initiative. The draft was submitted to the Armenian parliament for approval. On March 26, the parliament adopted it in its final reading and sent it to the president for signature. The document was signed on April 4 of that year. Moscow stated that Russia had conveyed to Armenia that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union was impossible.
