According to media reports, the Patriarchate of the Georgian Orthodox Church expressed concern over excavations being conducted on the territory of the Kurmukh Church of St. George, located in Azerbaijan. Specifically, they stated that these excavations are being conducted unilaterally and called on the Georgian authorities to respond to this situation. In response, the Azerbaijani MFA stated that such statements contradict the existing friendly relations between the countries and called the Georgian side's approach "contains territorial claims."

Notably, the Azerbaijani MFA also mentioned the Armenian Apostolic Church in its statement. "It is not recommended that the Georgian Patriarchate repeat the well-known approaches of the Armenian Church and follow its example," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry stated.
