The Spitak earthquake occurred on December 7, 1988, at 11:41 a.m. local time and claimed the lives of at least 25,000 people. At its epicenter in the city of Spitak, the intensity reached 10 on a 12-point scale. In Leninakan (Gyumri), the magnitude was 9 on the Richter scale, and in Kirovakan (Vanadzor), 8 on the Richter scale. The disaster affected approximately 40% of Armenia's territory, destroying the city of Spitak and causing colossal damage to other settlements. Hundreds of thousands of residents were left homeless.
