ArmInfo. A Public Committee for the Defense of Gagik Tsarukyan, the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party and businessman, has been established in Armenia.
"We, the undersigned, jointly initiated the creation of a Public Committee for the Defense of Gagik Tsarukyan. This initiative is not aimed at protecting just one person. Our primary goal is to protect human rights, justice, and the rule of law in Armenia. We are convinced that no citizen of our country should be subjected to politically motivated persecution, repression, economic deprivation, or illegal encroachment on their property," reads a statement signed by more than fifty public and political figures.
"At the same time, we emphasize that the Committee for the Defense of Gagik Tsarukyan is not an initiative aimed solely at protecting Tsarukyan." Unfortunately, there are numerous cases of human rights violations, political persecution, and imprisonment in Armenia. We view all of this as a single, common program for the protection of human rights. Our struggle is aimed at protecting justice, the rule of law, and human dignity," the Public Committee for the Defense of Gagik Tsarukyan said in a statement.
As a reminder, on July 6, the leader of the Prosperous Armenia party and businessman Gagik Tsarukyan was detained and taken to the Investigative Committee of Armenia. He is accused of organizing fraud and money laundering on an especially large scale. According to investigators, between 2022 and 2024, a group operating under his leadership, under the pretext of developing trade and economic ties between Armenia and Iran, created joint legal entities with the participation of Iranian citizens, after which they carried out a fraudulent scheme, causing damages totaling over $21 million. In addition, Gagik Tsarukyan faces another charge of illegal hunting. On July 7, the court granted the prosecution's motion to remand Tsarukyan in custody for two months. As part of the case, on July 6, law enforcement agencies conducted searches at more than 70 addresses associated with Tsarukyan. The doors of all businesses were subsequently sealed. Some of them were nationalized by the state.
